What is Harp Live?
What is "Harp Live"? Formerly, these programs were called "Performance
Practice". Since they are not really a performance nor a
practice session, we are now referring to them as "Harp Live". Come and play
music you enjoy in an informal, friendly, and non-critical atmosphere.
Bring a few of your favorite pieces to play, or something you might not
get to play somewhere else. This is a time you get to play what you want (even
if it’s unpolished), and a time to hear music you may want to
learn. Don’t miss these great opportunities to share music with fellow
harpists – we all need each other's support!

- "Hooray for Harpywood" Harp in the Movies,
Updated
This is a lighthearted look at how the harp is used in the movies, both onscreen and in the underscore. Film clips illustrate both on-camera performances and behind the scenes looks at composing, scoring, and mixing. And yes, it's okay to laugh!
Free and open to the public.

Paul Hurst

March 8, Saturday, 11-1 and 2-4
- Paul Hurst Workshop
- Improvisation for Harpists - Beginning
Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1710 Moorpark Avenue, corner of Moorpark and Leigh, San
Jose, CA 95128
April 6, Sunday, 1-5:30
- Paul Hurst Workshop
- Improvisation for Harpists - Advanced
Fammatre Elementary School
Cafeteria, 2800 New Jersey Avenue, San Jose 95124
Paul Hurst will give two
workshops a month apart, each limited to 16 participants
- first come, first served, with room for auditors.
The beginning session will teach the basics of improvisation: chords,
harmony and melodic construction. An introduction
and review for musicians of all levels on chord structure,
progressions, and general composition. Syllabus
included. This class is a
repeat of his last seminar two years ago.
The emphasis of the advanced session will be creating melody and harmonic progressions, along with accompaniment patterns and left hand voicing.
We will focus on a more “meditative” musical style to begin with, although this material can also be used in a rhythmic setting. You should have a good
understanding of the musical tools taught in the beginning improvisation class. This includes: major and minor scales, the four kinds
of triads (major, minor, diminished, and augmented), and the five kinds of seventh chords (major, dominant, minor, minor seventh-flat-five, and diminished)
and their inversions in all keys. You should have the ability to arpeggiate all triads and seventh chords, and know how to find the “10th position” triad voicing
(root-5th-3rd) for the left hand. You should also be familiar with the sequence of major, minor, and diminished chords within a key (I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, viiº)
and have basic familiarity with common chord progressions (such as I-IV-V7-I) and cadences (such as authentic: V7-I; plagal: IV-I; half or semi-cadence: ?-V).
If you miss the beginning class, please purchase and review the syllabus from Paul Hurst at 650-537-0210 or paul@harpmusic.com.
Fees are $50
per session for hands-on harpists, $25 per session for auditors. To register,
