Welcome
The Santa Clara Valley Chapter has about 75
member harpists located in Silicon Valley, in the South Bay Area of San
Francisco. We range from professional solo and/or orchestral
harpists to amateurs who simply enjoy playing the harp. We have
members of all ages, levels, and motivations, including pedal, lever,
and folk harpists.
Regular Chapter meetings include “Harp Live” sessions
in which chapter members are invited to bring their favorite pieces to
share or play for the group. Some sessions are dedicated to solo playing
and others to ensembles such as harp duets or chamber ensemble pieces.
We strive to present a wide variety of concert artists to inspire and educate
our members. We also sponsor workshops to help our members
increase their harp knowledge and proficiency on such topics as
arranging and improvisation, stage fright, or the healing properties of
harp music. We usually have 3-4 main events each year, plus Harp
Live sessions. Ideas are always welcome.
We are affiliated with the
American Harp Society (AHS)
which has over fifty chapters throughout the United States. Grown
from the needs of harpists - performers, teachers, and pupils - the
American Harp Society is a non profit corporation. Founded in
1962, the Society now has over 3000 members. The Society aims
to promote and educate its members and the general public about the harp
and its music. It encourages composition for the harp and aims to
showcase the finest performers on the instrument in the world today.
The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the AHS is
also a member of the
Silicon Valley Arts Coalition
(SVAC), whose mission is to increase visibility through the media and to
expand audiences for arts organizations with small budgets. The
membership includes theater companies, many musical groups and others.
Welcome Message from the President
Dear Members of the Santa Clara Valley Harp Society Chapter:
I am writing to you as your new president, and I hope you will join us for an exciting year ahead filled with a variety of activities
geared for all types of harpists.
I often ask myself, “Why should I bother with a harp society or an organization for harpists”? I think this is an honest concern
for many of us who are so busy. I believe that for those of us who are older, it is a chance to give back to all the people who have
helped us along the way. For the younger ones, our chapter should provide an opportunity for learning, support and performance
opportunity. In every case, our harp society creates a structure for us to relate to each other in our mutual love for the
harp.
I feel so lucky to play the harp. It is not an easy instrument to grasp or even have the opportunity to play. In my case, I wasn’t
able to have an instrument until I was in college, even though I wanted to play from the time I was eight years old. We all have
our stories, and in our opening meeting on October 4th, I hope that you will come prepared to tell your story so that we can get
to know each other better.
We have a wonderful new board of directors, all of whom you will meet on October 4th, but at this time I would like to extend
profound thanks to Celeste Misfeldt and Stephanie Janowski for all they have done for our chapter and for their endless hours of
hard work devoted to keeping our chapter alive, developing the website and the newsletter. We are giving them a much-needed
rest, but we hope they will stay with us in spirit and attend every event that is possible for them.
Sincerely,
Linda Wood Rollo, President
Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Harp Society.

2009 - 2010 Kick-off event
|
October 4, Sunday at 3:00 p.m - Featured entertainer: Destiny
Join us for our exciting Kick-off event!
The featured entertainer for this event is Destiny, the sound sculptress, on her acoustic electric Salvi harp, especially hot-wired by
her husband. You will not want to miss this harpist-from-the-hood experience! Following her entertainment, we will have a time
of “getting to know you”. This will be a “show and tell” where everyone is invited to tell briefly how they got interested in the harp
and to bring in memorabilia which is special to their harp-ness. Of course, there will be refreshments! This even will be held at the home of Linda Rollo, 15735 Peach Hill Rd, Saratoga.
*Remember this is the last day to pay dues, so bring along your checkbook if you have not already paid. |
